Eric Van Hoven Tenor Eric van Hoven began the 2002-2003 season with an old favorite, Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore, at Augusta Opera. He then made his debut in the role of Tamino in The Magic Flute in Oswego, New York. In the new year he moved to more devilish repertoire, performing the title role in Faust with Sacramento Opera, followed by another rendition of HMS Pinafore with Opera Omaha, directed by Dorothy Danner.

Recent and upcoming engagements include: Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore with Syracuse Opera, Gastone in La Traviata with the Palace Theater, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus with Sacramento Opera, Hoffman in Tales of Hoffman with Augusta Opera, Nemorino in L'Elisir d'amore with Augusta Opera; a New York Premiere of George Lowndes in Claudia Legare with Dicapo Opera, Tamino with Knoxville Opera and Virginia Opera; Faust with Dicapo Opera and Sacramento Opera, Eisenstein with Augusta Opera, Frederick in Pirates of Penzance with Intermountain Opera, and finally a return to Gilbert and Sullivan as Nanki Poo in Anchorage Opera's The Mikado.

This Mississippi native debuted at three of New York City's prestigious music venues within twelve consecutive months. His New York debut was with New York City Opera in their production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, followed by his concert debut at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall with American Symphony Orchestra singing the roles of Hermes in Bruch's Odysseus, 3rd Soldier in Hindemith's Murderer Hope of Women, and the 2nd Player in Kurt Weill's The Protagonist . He then celebrated his Broadway debut in Bernstein's Candide directed by Hal Prince.

Nationally and internationally Mr. van Hoven has performed with Opera De Las Americas in Santo Domingo, Portland Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Chicago Chamber Opera, Mobile Opera, Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, Asheville Lyric Opera, South Carolina Opera and Hawaii Opera Theatre. Eric has sung Beppe in I Pagliacci with Nevada Opera, Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Skylight Opera Theatre, and with Virginia Opera, as Camille in a new production of The Merry Widow. He has recently performed a concert as soloist with the Delaware Valley Philharmonic Symphony, and Obadiah in Elijah with the Meridian Symphony Orchestra.

He has premiered new works with Florida State Opera in the filmed opera Reverend Everyman portraying the evil role of Thanatos, Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, creating the role of the student Bubba in Under the Arbor, a PBS broadcast production, and Opera Roanoke, developing the role of Jonas in the opera Keepers of the Light with composer Jon Polifrone.

As comfortable in theatre Eric performed in Terrance McNally's Masterclass with Rosemary Prinz at Coconut Grove Playhouse singing the role of Tony and was seen as Nanki-Poo in an avant-garde production of The Mikado produced by Huntington Theatre and Northshore Musical Theatre in New England. Eric has even performed such roles as Lt. Jack Ross in A Few Good Men, Burt Jefferson in The Man Who Came to Dinner, and The Baron in Grand Hotel.

Mr. van Hoven held full scholarship at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music where he studied as an Artist Diploma candidate. He received a B.M. From Florida State University and, while completing a M.M. from Northwestern University, was featured as the Celebrant in Bernstein's Mass.
