Gwendolyn Jones by Lisa Kohler Oklahoma native Gwendolyn Jones first came to attention as the youngest winner of the national Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions at age nineteen. Following graduation from Oklahoma City University, Miss Jones began a nine year residency with the San Francisco Opera appearing in both Fall and Spring Seasons in roles as diverse as Genevieve in Pelleas et Melisande, Sextus in Guilio Cesare, the Gymnasiast in Lulu and creating the role of Paulina in John Harbison's Winter's Tale among others.

Praised by the New York Times for her "commanding presence" and "innate lyricism", Gwendolyn Jones appears frequently with New York City Opera at Lincoln Center - most notably as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, the Witch in Hansel and Gretel and Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro. Noted for her detailed characterizations, she has sung a wide variety of roles throughout the United States including: Carmen, Amneris (Aida), Cherubino, Fricka (Die Walküre), Venus (Tannhäuser), Charlotte (Werther) and Orfeo. Internationally, her work has included the Spoleto Festival in Italy (L'Ormindo); the Teatro Municipal in Brazil (Orfeo and Werther), The Orchestra Sinfonica di Santa Domingo (world premiere of Antonio Braga's 1492), concerts in Israel, and two tours of the Far East which included the orchestras of Singapore, Malasia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and China.

On the concert stage, highlights have included Die Götterdamerung at Carnegie Hall with Sir George Solti, de Falla's Three-Cornered Hat with Seiji Ozawa, Mahler's Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen at Alice Tully Hall with the New York Chamber Orchestra, and La Mort de Cleopatra by Berlioz at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center with the American Symphony. Summer Festivals have included the Ravinia Festival and Blossom Festival with the San Francisco Ballet in performances of Songs of Mahler and Mozart's Mass in C minor, the Berkshire Choral Institute in the Verdi , Durufle Requiem, and Bach Magnificat, the Carmel Bach Festival for the Bach B Minor Mass and Magnificat, and Ravel's Chansons de Madecasses for Iowa's Summer Chamber Music Festival.

Highlights of her 2000/2001 seasons for included Alma March (Little Women) for Houston Grand Opera and Opera of the Pacific, Elizabeth I (Gloriana) and Little Women for Central City Opera, Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro) for New York City Opera and El Paso Opera, Adalgisa (Norma) for Des Moines Metro Opera, and the Komponist (Ariadne auf Naxos) for New Orleans Opera.

Recent and upcoming projects include: Herodias in Salome with Des Moines; the Witch (Hansel and Gretel) with Nashville Opera; Alma March (Little Women) with Opera Omaha and Carmen for Nevada Opera. With New York City Opera she will sing Marcellina, Alma March, The Witch and the Monitor in Suor Angelica.
