Guiping Deng was born in China where she was a soloist
for the Central Broadcasting Company and won the National Singing Competition.
Before coming to the United States to study with Phylis Curtin at Boston University
and at Tanglewood on a fellowship, she appeared on television, bringing with her the
experiences of her acting and ballet training.Comfortable in both contemporary and
traditional repertoire, her roles include Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni,
The Countess
in The Marriage of Figaro, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Liu
Turandot,The Governess
in The Turn of the Screw,Mimi in La Boheme with Los Angeles
Opera Center, Saint Louis Opera Theatre,
Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Delaware, as well as the title role in Madama
Butterfly which she has sung withLos Angeles Opera Center, Opera
Theatre of St. Louis, Houston Grand Opera, Opera Portland, Maine and Connecticut Opera.
This season Ms. Deng sings Cio Cio San with Boston Lyric Opera; Sacramento Opera; makes her Canadian debut with Calgary Opera; Festival Opera and Piedmont Opera. Next season Ms. Deng sings Cio Cio San with Arizona Opera and Mimi with Sacramento Opera. Ms. Deng's 1999/2000 performances include: Cio Cio San with Cleveland Opera, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Capital City Opera and Santa Barbara Opera; and Mimi with Nevada Opera. 1997/98 performances include Liu in Turandot with Opera Pacific, Mimi in La Boheme with Mobile Opera, the title role in Madama Butterfly with Central City Opera; Buffalo Opera; Rochester Opera; Adrian Symphony/Opera Lenawee and will sing in the Opera Night Gala with the Colorado Symphony. Ms. Deng has appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Cantata Singers, Utah Symphony Orchestra and the Beijing Orchestra in works ranging from Mozart's Requiem to Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. Last season Ms. Deng sang Cio Cio San with Boston Lyric Opera; Sacramento Opera; Festival Opera; Piedmont Opera and made her Canadian debut with Calgary Opera. This season Ms. Deng sings Cio Cio San with Arizona Opera, Mimi with Sacramento Opera (11/02) and Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra (10/02). The 2003/04 season sees Ms. Deng as Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly with Virginia Opera (4-5/04). |
